Stephanie’s Plant Pick for May - Proteas

Protea Pink Ice (14cm)

I love to garden using Australian native plants; there are so many amazing varieties. However, if I want to add some extra colour & form, you can’t go past adding Proteas, Leucadendrons and Leucospermums into the mix.

These plants are South African icons that fit perfectly into Australian native gardens due to their shared love for well-drained, acidic soil and low-phosphorus environments, and there is so much choice! From large, showy flowers perfect for a vase, to amazing variations in colours and textures, they will add a real “wow” factor to any garden design.

How to use them in the landscape

These plants work beautifully as drought-tolerant focal points or hardy screens alongside Australian natives such as Banksias and Grevilleas. Mass plantings will give real impact, especially in a larger garden. They also look fabulous in planters and pots and provide long-lasting cut flowers.

How to grow them

To keep them thriving, plant them in full sun and ensure they never have "wet feet" (well-drained acidic soil). Until they are established, they will require a weekly drink (first 12 to 18 months). Once established, they are drought-tolerant and typically only need deep watering occasionally during hot, dry spells.

Pruning and Maintenance

Post-flowering, prune immediately after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage more blooms for next year. Avoid cutting old wood, as many species will not reshoot from these areas.

Use a 10cm layer of coarse mulch (like bark or wood chips) to keep roots cool and suppress weeds, but keep it away from the main stem to prevent collar rot.

Fertilising

Use a low-phosphorus fertiliser specifically designed for Australian native plants in early spring.
